Some XP Start Menu Shortcuts Created [twitter]5/26/2013 6:52:56 AM
Some XP Start Menu Shortcuts Created Some of the Start Menu shortcuts that were created by the OS during the installation process no longer work. Whenever I click on them, I get the following error message: The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." I know how to create associations for files, but not shortcuts or "links," as the OS calls them, that were created during the OS installation process. The shortcuts I'm talking about, all in the right frame of the Start menu, are: My Computer, My Pictures, My Music, My Computer, My Network Places, Control Panel, and Printers and Faxes. Now, when I click on these first 4 items, it displays the contents of these folders in a menu fashion, and I can click and open any file/item in the menu. However, when I do the same with My Computer, I get the same error as I got it was displayed as a link (the one about how there's no program associated with the file and that I need to create an association). I recreated shortcuts to some of the items, such as the Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, and dragged them to the Start Menu, so they would appear in the left frame underneath the other user created shortcuts that work okay. I also dragged the My Computer, My Network Places, and My Documents icons that are on my desktop (created by going to Customize Desktop in Display Properties) in order to do the same thing. However, whenever I click on any of them, I first get the same error message as before, but when I clear it, I get a new one that says, "The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do You want to remove it from the list?" and there are Yes and No buttons underneath the message. There are some shortcuts that I created and put in the Start menu, that are displayed on the left side, that all work fine. However, I also had shortcuts to the C drive and to the Control Panel which I created and put my desktop, and they also stopped working as the ones in the Start Menu and I get the same error message as previously mentioned when I click on them. I re-created the shortcuts to the C drive and Control Panel that I had on the desktop, by right clicking on each of them in My Computer, dragging them to the desktop, and selecting Create Shortcut here. But, I get the same error message about file association whenever I click on them. I have searched the Microsoft site as well as done a Google search for both shortcuts not working and the file association error message without finding any solution for my specific problem. I assume that if I do a reinstall of XP over top of itself, which I have done before to correct problems, that it will probably correct this one, since this seems to be some type of system setting problem. However, I was hoping to find a simpler solution, and any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
